Supplemental or ‘exogenous’ ketones have been receiving a lot of popular attention lately, and for good reason. Adding in additional ketones is a quick and efficient way for the body to enter into a state of ketosis, giving the body an energetic, athletic and cognitive boost.
Cells need energy all the time. The most common way that energy is produced is to break down sugar from the diet or from what’s stored in the liver or muscle tissue. The alternative is to breakdown fats from the diet or stored body fat for cellular energy. This process produces ketones, which are then also used as an additional energy source in the brain, muscle and heart.
As we shift away from breaking down glucose/sugar/carbs for energy toward the use of fats/ketones, we experience many health benefits including:
-Better focus and cognition
-Accelerated weight loss
-Improved athletic performance
There is a wide array on health conditions for which ketones are showing great promise. These include:
-Type 2 Diabetes
-Poor digestion/gut health
With the addition of supplemental ketones essentially everyone will notice a positive improvement in their overall health. Ketones are safe to take with most medications but we always recommend consultation with a naturopathic physician to ensure safety before taking ketones supplements long-term.
In future posts I will explain the benefits of ketones for specific conditions and in much more details so keep an eye out!
